Explore the forbidden kingdom of Mustang, trek through desert-like landscape and experience Tibetan Buddhist culture on the Lower Mustang Trek!
This 07 day Lower Mustang Trek takes you through the barren valleys and small settlements up to the sacred temple of Muktinath at 3710m. This trek is perfect for those looking to experience the rich culture and unique scenery of Mustang in a short amount of time. The Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist culture and lifestyle of the local Gurung and Magar people is sure to be a memorable experience. Apart from the cultural experience, the trek offers amazing views of the landscape similar to that of the Tibetan plateau, which is formed due to the region lying in the Himalayan rain shadow. You will also witness views of Himchuli, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Annapurna and more during the trek.
The Lower Mustang Trek starts with a flight/drive from the capital to the lake side city of Pokhara. Spend the day exploring the city before taking another flight to Jomsom the next morning. Finally, the trek begins and you’ll notice a stark difference from the typical Nepali scenery of lush green hills and crystalline mountains. As you walk along the Kali Gandaki River, the barren valleys are reminiscent of a high altitude desert. From Kagbeni, make a thousand meter ascent to the holy pilgrimage of Muktinath. There are a number of spots to explore here, including the Jwala Mai temple. Stay the night at Rani Pauwa and trek back to Jomsom the next day. Enjoy the apples, brandies and ciders of Marpha before you take a flight back to Pokhara.
The Lower Mustang Trek is a moderate difficulty trek that doesn’t require any prior trekking experience or technical climbing skills. However, good physical fitness and stamina will certainly make the trek easier. Some other factors you need to consider for the Manaslu Circuit Trek are:
Since most of the trail lies below 3000 meters, with the highest point (Muktinath) being at only 3710 meters, altitude sickness is generally not an issue on this trek. Nonetheless, remember to stay hydrated and listen to your body at all times.
Our Lower Mustang Trek generally lasts for a week or a little more. During this time, you’ll trek for 4-5 hours per day on average. The trail, especially during the 1000 meter ascent to Muktinath can call for some good fitness and stamina. So, we recommend preparing your body with running, HIIT or hiking itself, prior to the trek.
The Lower Mustang Trek is open to visitors all year long. With majority of the trail lying in the Himalayan rain shadow, monsoon isn’t a problem. And since the trail mostly doesn’t rise higher than 3000 meters, you won’t have any issues for winter trekking either. However, if you want to have the best possible experience and enjoy the clearest views, then we recommend visiting during the spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) seasons.
