The Langtang Valley Trek is an easy but enjoyable trek that explores the ‘valley of glaciers’, Langtang. It is one of the most accessible treks as it is located very close to the capital. The trek leads you through picturesque villages, lush forests, tranquil valleys and scenic trails all the way up to Tserko Ri (5000m).
Apart from the Langtang Lirung (7246m) that dominates the skyline of the valley, you will be able to view many other snowcapped peaks including Annapurna, Shishapangma, Ganesh Himal and Naya Kang among others.
Another reason for the Langtang Valley Trek’s popularity is the rich and untouched culture of the region. The region is home to numerous Tamang villages, whose Hyolmo culture will certainly be an interesting experience for trekkers passing through. The various chortens and monasteries along the trail, including the famed Kyanjin Gompa also add to this experience.
This 11 days Langtang Valley Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to the trailhead at Syabrubesi. You will hike via Lama Hotel and Langtang Village up to Kyanjin Gompa. The next morning, have a pre-dawn hike to Tserko-Ri to enjoy the breathtaking view of the whole region and its various peaks shimmering in the sunlight. Afterwards, retrace your steps to Syabrubesi via Lama Hotel. Over the course of this journey, you will pass through parts of the Langtang National Park. This conservation area is home to thousands of species of flora and fauna including red pandas, snow leopards, musk deer, Himalayan monal, crimson pheasant and more. The trek finally ends with a drive back to the capital from Syabrubesi.
The Langtang Valley Trek is best described as a moderately strenuous trek. While the trail is located at fairly high altitudes, they aren’t actually that hard to trek on. Thus, this suitable for newcomers and veterans alike. Some other factors you need to consider for the Langtang Valley Trek are:
The Langtang Valley Trek takes you up to peak altitudes of over 5000 meters. Along with this, most of the trail is located above 3000 meters. Thus, being comfortable with altitude trekking is necessary. Also remember to stay hydrated, ascend steadily and set aside some days for acclimatization to help combat altitude sickness.
The trek generally last two weeks or a little more depending on the route. You will trek for an average of 5-6 hours per day.
The Langtang Valley Trek is open to visitors all year long. However, the best time to visit as with most other treks is during the spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) seasons. These periods are perfect due to their stable weather, clear views and moderate temperature. The trek is also performable in winter, although the temperature may make it uncomfortable for some.
