Explore some of the most pristine Himalayan trails and experience an adventure in wilderness on this 23 day journey around Kanchenjunga ! With the stunning mountain views, diverse culture, untouched trails and the rich biodiversity that this trek offers, it is truly a hidden gem.

Your journey begins from the trailhead at Lali Kharka, which you can reach via Bhadrapur or Taplejung. The trail courses through the pristine Arun valley with daily stops at Khesewa, Mamanke, Yamphudin and Tortong. The next week will be very enjoyable thanks to all the side trips and exploration, starting with the first one at Tseram. The second one will be the hike to Yalung La Base Camp via Ramchaur. The third one will take you to the Sele La camp via Mirgin La. After a few days of trekking through Ghunsa, Khambachen and Lhonak, we will accomplish the main goal of our trek; the hike to Pangpema. The next few days will comprise of the return journey to Bhadrapur via Amjilosa, Chirwa and Suketar. Finally, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek comes to a closure with a scenic flight back to the capital. 

Over the course of this journey, you will pass through numerous Sherpa, Rai, Limbu and Gurung villages and get the opportunity to closely experience their culture and lifestyle. Another reason to perform this trek is to explore the rich alpine ecosystem of the region, which comprises of junipers, evergreen conifers, rhododendrons, Himalayan larches and more. The region is also home to various species of Himalayan wildlife such as red pandas, blue sheep, musk deer, snow leopards and Himalayan black bears among others.

Note: The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project permit ($20 per person) and Kanchenjunga Restricted Area permit ($10 per person per week) are necessary for this trek.

Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek Difficulty

The Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek is a strenuous trek that is best suited for trekkers with some prior experience under their belt. Majority of the trail is above 3000 meters and the daily trekking hours tend to get quite long. So, having good physical fitness and stamina is an absolute necessity. Some other factors you need to consider for the Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek are:

Elevation:

With the highest point at over 5000 meters and a lot of trekking over 3/4000 meters, the Kanchenjunga BC Trek is certainly a high altitude trek. It is important to know this in case you aren’t comfortable with altitude or if you have had issues with altitude sickness. Finally, when trekking at high altitudes, remember to stay hydrated, ascend at a steady pace and take adequate rest/acclimatization days.

Length:

The Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek generally lasts a little over 3 weeks. The average trekking hours are longer than most other treks at 6-7 hours per day. 

Best Season for Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek

The best time to attempt the Kanchenjunga (Pangpema) Base Camp Trek is definitely during spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November). These periods generally have the most stable weather, moderate temperatures and clear skies. Contrary to this, monsoon is known for unstable weather and the occasional downpour which can make the trails dangerous.

Day 10: Exploration day at Tseram (3970m)

Day 11: Trek from Tseram to Ramchaur (4580m) 5 hours

Day 12: Hike to Yalung La Base camp, 6 hours

Our representative will be awaiting your arrival outside Tribhuwan International Airport. Look for signboards of your name. They will welcome you to Nepal and escort you to your hotel where you can rest after your flight. Enjoy some traditional Nepali dinner in the evening.

As today is a free day, you may spend it as you see fit. You can rest at the hotel, head downtown for some shopping or explore the city on your own. We do also offer a guided tour around the valley’s prominent landmarks such as Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and the Durbar Squares among other sites. Meanwhile, our staff will acquire the permits that you’ll need for trekking in the Kanchenjunga region.

You will have the morning to yourself. Meet up with the rest of the group for lunch. There, your trek leader will brief you regarding the trek and hand you your permits. Then, head to TIA for an afternoon flight to Bhadrapur.

Catch a bus or hire a jeep from Bhadrapur for a morning drive to Taplejung. The short journey will take you through the scenic tea gardens of Illam. After lunch at Taplejung, begin the trek towards Deurali. It is an easy and pleasant journey to the grazing fields of Lali Kharka.

Start today’s trek by crossing some suspension bridges on your way to Pakora. The trail then takes you through the villages of Yangpang and Khunjuri, and finally to your destination, Khesewa. There, you’ll see your first sighting of Kanchenjunga, basking in the evening sun.

The trail today leads you through Anpan village, your first stop for the day. The trek will be fairly easy as usual past the terraced fields and pleasant hills. Continue on to Khawase khola before eventually reaching the village of Mamanke.

The trek gets starts to get longer now as make our way through the pleasant trail towards Yamphudin. You will pass some refreshing waterfalls and small streams on your way today. However, the highlight of the day will certainly be cardamom and tea plantations. In the evening, you will have to get your permits checked to continue further on the trek.

After an early breakfast, head out of Yamphudin and begin the steep ascent to Tortong. We will follow the Amji Khola all the way to the grazing fields of Chitre. This steep ascent will take us most of the day as we walk through the terraced hills. After a brief stop for lunch at Chitre, resume the climb towards Lasiya Bhanjyang. Finally, follow the Simbuwa Khola while enjoying the sight of Kumbhakarna in the north east to conclude the 1000 meter ascent to Tortong.

Another day of ascending lies ahead of us as we resume the trek through the pleasant rhododendron forests. You’ll have clearer views of the shimmering peaks today, increasingly as the day passes. After trekking past refreshing rivers, forests and numerous shrines, we will eventually arrive at Tseram.

You have a number of options available for the day. You can explore Tseram village and interact with locals or hike to the nearby lake. Either way, it will be an enjoyable day. This off day will also serve the purpose of an acclimatization day. As the trek will now take us over 4000 meters, proper acclimatization will become more important than ever.

After yesterday’s rest day, today’s short trek will be a breeze as you ascend 600 meters from Tseram to Ramchaur. The trail will pass through mossy pine and rhododendron forests up to Lapsang. Ramchaur is a short distance further. Once there, spend the afternoon exploring the frozen lakes and clear streams of Ramchaur while enjoying the sight of Koktang, Rathong and Kabru.

We will tread deeper into the valley today follow the stream up to Oktang Monastery. From there, it is a short climb further to Yalung La Base Camp. Yalung La B.C. is an amazing vantage point that offers stunning views of Kumbhakarna and Nyukla Lachung among other peaks. Once you’re done savoring the breathtaking view, return back to Ramchaur.

The trail today leads us towards the north side of Kanchenjunga. Accordingly, the journey will be quite tough as we steadily cross the Sinelapche Bhanjyang, the Mirgin la pass, the Sinion la pass to finally reach Sele La. You will witness a truly memorable view of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse, Jannu and Gyakung Kang among others from here. The view of the Terai region as far as the eye can see is a unique sight.

Today’s trek will be comparatively easier as we steadily walk through the rocky trails north of Sele La. We will pass through Jannu and a peaceful forest to eventually arrive at the village of Ghunsa. Enjoy the local specialty ‘Tongba’ to conclude the day’s adventure.

Set out on the trail after breakfast as usual and follow the trail past the Ghunsa khola. Trek through pine and rhododendron forests and cross a suspension bridge to reach Rampuk Kharka. After a brief stop for lunch and rest, continue the trek and pass a waterfall to eventually reach Khambachen.

Our first stop for the day will be the Ramtang monastery. Even at such high altitudes, trekking on the dry terrain will not be hard thanks to beautiful scenery surrounding you. Cross some bridges and maybe encounter some herds of blue sheep before eventually reaching Lhonak.

Explore one of the main highlights of the trek today as you trek above 5000 meters to the northern base camp of Kanchenjunga, Pang Pema. The base camp is a good view point, especially for the north face of Kanchenjunga. The evening might be quite chilly at this altitude, so remember to get some layers on. Rest early to prepare for the trek tomorrow.

Early in the morning, climb up the ridge for a breathtaking sunrise view of the Kanchenjunga range. Then, resume on the trail for a lengthy descent today. The trek will be easy as most of the trek is downhill but it might be rough on your knees. So, make use of a supporting staff if necessary.

This is a shorter day of trekking through the forested paths and grassy hillsides with the first stop at Phale. After a brief stop there, resume on the trail and pass a few monasteries, rivers and waterfalls. A steep descent through the bamboo forest will lead you to Amjilosa.

The descent continues today as we follow the Simbu Khola (which originates from Kanchenjunga’s South Base Camp). After we pass through Lelep, we will enter a shady forest and then walk past the farmlands to finally reach Chirwa.

Enjoy the last session of trekking on the Kanchenjunga Circuit today. We will follow the Pathibhara trail and pass a number of villages on our way to Suketar. With the trek finally at an end, we will have a commemoratory lunch and celebration at Suketar before catching a bus to Bhadrapur.

Pack up your things and head to nearby Bhadrapur airport for a scenic morning flight back to Kathmandu. You will able to enjoy the last aerial views of the various peaks and the whole region in general. Back in the capital, you’ll be escorted back to your hotel. You may spend the rest of the day as you please. A trip downtown for souvenir shopping and exploration might be a good idea. In the evening, you’ll be provided with a delicious dinner in traditional Nepal cuisine and some entertainment as well.

The trip has officially come to an end today. A few hours before your flight, check out of your hotel. Our representative will then escort you to Tribhuwan International Airport and bid you farewell in hopes of seeing you again.
