Everest Base Camp Heli Trek Route

11 Days Everest Heli Trek starts with an exhilarating trans-Himalayan flight to one of the dramatic airport in the world – Lukla. Later, we walk along the gushing Dudh Koshi River and climb through dense rhododendron forest and villages to Namche Bazaar. We spend one extra night here to acclimatize our body at thin atmosphere. On this day, we will walk to the Everest view hotel to enjoy incredible panorama of Everest, Tawache, Lhotse, Ama Dablam etc. 

We witness and explore the esteemed Tengboche monastery before heading towards Dingboche. It is a small walled village facing towards the most beautiful Amadablam peak. Dingboche is a great place to spend two nights to acclimatize in thinner oxygen before heading above 5,000m. 

As we move towards Gorakshep via Lobuche, the temperature significantly drops and forest line gives way to alpine scrubs. The hike to Everest base Camp over the vast Khumbu glacier can be strenuous but the efforts are well-compensated by the magical sceneries. For more up-close view, we make a pre-sunrise hike to Kalapatthar at 5,545m – a real sense of achievement. Ultimately, we drop down to Gorak Shep and take a scenic heli ride amid of spectacular valley and stunning peaks back to Kathmandu. 

Everest Base Camp Heli Trek Difficulty 

Everest Base Camp Heli Trek difficulty depends on the season you are travelling and your fitness level. Peak seasons are usually less-challenging and you might find the trek highly strenuous if you are physically in-active. 

It is important to know that the hike itself is considered as non-technical. This means that you do not need to acquire any technical climbing skills for Mt. Everest Base Camp hike. In fact, regardless of age and size, anyone can conquer the base camp. 

The most crucial thing that makes Everest Base Camp a challenge is its altitude. Walk on gradual pace, stay hydrated and schedule acclimatization plan to stay away from altitude challenges.

Outline Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350m/4,428ft) and transfer to the hotel

Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and trek to Phakding (2,651m/8,7ft): minutes flight, 8km, 3 – 4 hours trek

Day 03: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,270ft): 11km, 5 – 6 hours

Day 04: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar (3,440m/11,284ft)

Day 05: Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3,870m/12,694ft): 10km, 5 – 6 hours

Day 06: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360m/14,300ft): 9km, 5 – 6 hours

Day 07: Acclimatization day at Dingboche

Day 08: Dingboche to Lobuche (4,940m/16,207ft): 11 km, 6 – 7 hours

Day 09: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,170m/16,961ft), visit Everest Base Camp (5,364m/17,594ft): 13km, 6 – 7 hours

Day 10: Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar (5,545m/18,192ft) and back to Gorekshep. Fly back to Kathmandu

Day 11: Final departure



Upon your arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport, our representative from NEFA Treks will receive you and transfer you to the designated hotel. As we don’t have any travel schedule, you can simply stroll leisurely around the street of Thamel to get acquainted with local culture and traditions.

After early morning breakfast, we will drive to domestic airport to take a scenic flight to Lukla. The flight to Lukla is so adventurous that it is itself a lifetime experience. The airfield is surrounded by lofty hills and difference between the two ends of the runway is about an exceptional 60 m only. Once we reach Lukla, we meet our rest of the crew and start trekking towards Phakding with the view of emerald landscapes and Himalayan peaks. Today we will trek towards Namche Bazaar through lush pine forest along the Dudh Koshi River. We cross the tributaries several time and continue towards the Sherpa settlements of Benkar (2,710m), Chumoa (2,820m), Monjo (2,840m) and Jorsale (2,830m). Jorsale is the major entry point to the Sagarmatha National Park. Thamserku stands to the east of the villages. We further follow the river to its confluence with the Bhote Koshi River. Next we climb steeply and cross the high Tenzing Hilary Bridge before heading for 3 hours steep climb to region’s administrative and trade center at Namche Bazaar. Today is first scheduled acclimatization day on Everest Base Camp Trek. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) expert suggest at least 24 hours rest period after every 1,500 – 2,000m gain in altitude. We stay active throughout the day: climb high and sleep low. Only Namche Bazaar in entire Khumbu region offers ATMs, cyber cafes, restaurants and bakeries. The Sagarmatha Visitor Center displays variety of flora & fauna and Sherpa culture. We can hike to the village of Khumjung (3,780m) which presents more clear view of Sherpa lifestyle than Namche. We can spend morning hike up to the village and visit Khumjung monastery which houses the scalp of Yeti! Then we can make a circular trail, exploring the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) on the way. If time permits, we can trek for five more hours west to Thame village (3,820m) below the impressive Kongde Ri Ridge (6,187m): offering impressive view of Himalayan vistas. After breakfast, we walk to the top end of Namche and walk alongside the hill to Sanasa (3,600m). Here the trail splits: NW to Gokyo and NE to Everest. Keep your eye out for Himalayan wildlife – Himalayan Thar, Shy spotted deer and birds including colorful Danphe (pheasant) - the national bird of Nepal. Taking NE route we descend down to the water operated prayer wheels at Phunki Thenga (3,250m) and cross the Dudh Koshi River at its confluence with the Imja Khola. We then climb steeply for two hours up the Imja Khola through rhododendron forest to the hilltop village of Tengboche. Tengboche offers the grand view of Everest group. Here we can explore the region’s largest monastery – Tengboche monastery. Overnight in Tengboche Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Initially we drop down to the small stone hamlet of Debuche (3,820m) with nunnery. Then we cross the Imja River before climbing gently towards Pangboche (3,860m) with impressive view of Ama Dablam (6,856m). We follow the river with its confluence with Lobuche River and then climb gradually towards Dingboche. Dingboche is the last year-round settlement of the region. Here we can see walled fields which is built to protect crops from icy winds and grazing yaks. Overnight in Dingboche Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

In order to acclimatize, we climb to nearby Nangkartshang Gompa ridge (4,800m) and enjoy the glorious view of Himalayas and valleys. Imja Tse (6,189m), Makalu (8,463m), Ama Dablam and Amphu Lapcha’s fluted ridge are some significant peaks seen for here. We retrace back to teahouse at Dingboche for overnight stay. After breakfast, we climb gently towards the ridge and the village of Duse (4,500m) enjoying the western face of Taboche and Cholatse. Walking through the yak grazing land, we reach Duglha. Then we climb to the Khumbu Glacier’s huge stony terminal moraine where stone memorial chorten are placed in memory of lost climbers. An hours of gentle climb from terminal moraine leads us to Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The trail to the Everest Base Camp is not very strenuous. However, we walk on a glacier path and make series ups and downs on a rough terrain which can be quite tedious. A desolate tail along the moraine leads us to the temporary village of Gorak Shep below Mt. Pumori. After early lunch, we take to the cold and dry Everest Base Camp; nestled on a Khumbu glacier beneath the dreadful icefall. Everest Base Camp showcases the up-close view of Mt. Nuptse, Khumbutse and Pumori mountains, while Everest still hides behind the wall of rocks and ices. After enjoying the beauty, we trek back to Gorak Shep where we spend the night. From teahouse, we make a pre-dawn climb up to Kala Patthar (5,545m) which reveals 360 degree view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Changtse, north of Rongbuk Glacier, Pumori, Lungtren and Khumbutse amidst of countless other peaks. When first ray of sun strikes on milky peaks, the scenery is just magical. We then retrace back to Goraksep and then take an adventurous helicopter flight back to Kathmandu. The aerial view of Himalayan peaks and mesmerizing Khumbu valley will enthrall you. Once in Kathmandu, we will drive back to the hotel and take well-deserved rest.
